Encampment-Landscape From Chopper #2 (an installation piece)

In Encampment—Landscape From Chopper #2, I utilize a concept that the multihyphenate artist, Romare Bearden refers to as collage “projections,” in order to relate how multiple “sites” of global capitalism, war, colonialism, and the fetishized university contribute to a psychogeography of violence and disembodiment.

Combining mixed-media and sonic collage with silkscreen print and landscape painting techniques, the installation piece is an afterimage of the encampment that began with the student demonstrations at Columbia University to protest the Palestinian genocide in Gaza. A solidarity movement that eventually spread worldwide. Drawing connections between apartheid South Africa; the wars in Sudan and the Sahel region of Africa; the Norfolk Southern freight train derailment that spawned an ecological disaster in East Palestine, Ohio and its linkages to the anti-Black poverty of Cleveland. The installation piece includes texts by Afropessimist thinkers, Selamawit Terrefe and Frank Wilderson, as well as a soundscape of archival and originally recorded material.
